St. Louis: Evaporation Line On Pregnancy Test - Read The Instructions To Avoid These Lines

St. Louis,

Many women think they know all there is to know about at-home pregnancy tests, but many women find that they are unfamiliar with an evaporation line on a pregnancy test. It happens frequently and the result is often devastating to women who didn’t realize this was a possibility until they see their doctor or take a secondary test.

Before further discussing what causes an evaporation line on a pregnancy test, it’s important that women understand precisely how these tests work for an idea of how they can avoid seeing an evaporation line on a pregnancy test and wondering if they are or are not actually expecting the baby they so desperately hope to have.

Home pregnancy tests are fairly simple. You take them and they tell you whether or not you are expecting a baby. However, they’re really not that simple. What goes into the makeup of an at-home pregnancy test can be quite complicated. For example, tests often show false negative results. False positive results are very rare but do occur. Tests can expire, they can work incorrectly and users who don’t take the time to read the specific instructions for that particular test are more likely to misuse the test and experience incorrect results.

Additionally, these tests are not always 99 percent accurate as they state in bold lettering on the front of their packaging. In fact, pregnancy tests are only this accurate beginning on the first day of your missed period. Before that, the accuracy levels are much lower. Finally, even though an at-home pregnancy test states that it can tell you as many as five or six days before your missed period whether or not you are expecting does not work for all women; in fact, it only works for a small percentage of women.

How At-Home Pregnancy Tests Work

At-home pregnancy tests work by detecting the level of hCG in your urine. This is the pregnancy hormone. If you take a test immediately after you think you conceive, the test will not work. It takes as much as a full week before your fertilized egg makes its ways into your uterus and implants itself on your uterine wall. Your body does not begin to produce hCG until that egg is fertilized and implanted on the wall.

At that point, it still might not be possible to get a positive pregnancy test result. Why? Because every test is different and each one is created to read different levels of hCG. A woman is considered pregnant if her hCG levels exceed 5 mIU. However, it takes anywhere from 48 to 72 hours for hCG levels to double and most at-home pregnancy tests are not sensitive enough to detect pregnancy until your levels are around 25 mIU. This means it could take a week or two after your egg implants to tell that you are pregnant because all women’s hCG levels rise at a different rate.

What Are Evaporation Lines on Pregnancy Tests?

Now that you know how an at-home pregnancy test works, it’s time to understand how to read the test, which will provide you with a great deal of insight into an evaporation line on a pregnancy test. The first step is to carefully read the instructions. Each test works the same way, but requires a few different considerations. For example, some tests allow you to hold the test in your urine and others allow you to use a cup. Some require you hold the test for this many seconds and some require you do so for less time.

Other tests ask that you hold a test a certain way and lay a test on the counter in a certain direction. Every test tells you how many minutes you have to wait before you can read the results and exactly how long those results are accurate before chemicals and time change the results of the test.

Not following the instructions to a tee could mean that your test is invalid. Here’s what you need to know about evaporation lines; evaporation lines are lines that appear in a test after the test has been used and sitting for a while. This is why manufacturers insist that you only look at the results during a very specific time frame.

When your urine begins to evaporate from the test strip with time, it leaves a faint line in the same location a line would appear if you are pregnant. This line is called an evaporation line. Many women look at their tests and see a negative result, save it and look again hours later. If there is a second line on the test hours later, it’s an evaporation line. It’s not a pregnancy indicator.

If you do not see a positive result inside the allotted time frame discussed in the instructions of your at-home pregnancy test, throw it away immediately. Keeping it and looking at it later might give you false hope. False hope will cause you to think you might be pregnant because a second line appeared, but this line does not mean you are pregnant.

Of course, this is not to say you aren’t pregnant. Your hCG levels simply might not be high enough to determine whether or not you’re pregnant just yet. However, if you want to avoid the questions and the worry that come with an evaporation line on a pregnancy test, read the instructions and discard your test immediately after checking the results.

St. Louis: How to Get Pregnant by Scheduling Sex - 5 Tips on Getting Pregnant the Easy and Fun Way!

St. Louis,

Couples having difficulty to have a baby often resort to schedule sex in a rather boring way. Their sole purpose is to make sure conception occurs at the right time. Pleasure takes a back seat and it becomes a chore to have sex in order to produce a baby.

If you are trying to figure out how to get pregnant after many failed attempts, here are top 5 tips to get back your confidence while scheduling sex!

Tip 1- timing is first and everything

We are talking about pinpointing certain times in a month where chances of conception is highest.

The hard fact is ovulation (the time an egg is produced by a woman ready for fertilization by a sperm) ALWAYS occurs 12 to 14 days before the next period is due to begin. Or to be more precise the period will start 12 to 14 days after ovulation occurs. And it is theoretically the best timing to conceive provided one of the sperms mange to meet the egg successfully.

The other two ways are monitor the onset of ovulation by means of an ovulation predictor kit (OPK) and spotting the physical body symptoms of ovulation.

OPK is readily available from your neighborhood pharmacy. Its principle of detection is the rise of luteinizing hormone (LH) present in the urine of the woman. The LH level is set to increase just before ovulation occurs. The only setback of this test is some women inherently have high levels of LH especially those who are nearing menopause. In such case, it might not be very accurate.

A woman could easily tell that ovulation has occurred when one of the following symptoms is present:-

  • her basal body temperature dips a little just before ovulation and then rises again after ovulation

  • her cervical mucus becomes more and more slippery, stretchy and transparent when approaching ovulation

  • mittelschmerz(a term to describe one-sided, lower abdominal pain that occurs in women at or around the time of an egg is released from the ovaries)

Tip 2 – schedule your sexual intercourse

It is best to write down on the calendar that expected ovulation date and at least have sex on one day before ovulation and on alternate days for next five days. It may look unsexy to plan a specific week to make love but it could well be very romantic if you plan well.

Some spices could be added during the week like engaging in verbal and physical foreplay romantically, intimate body massage, light music, light candles or some fantasy play if you are up to it.

Tip 3 – try out different positions

Although the missionary position (man-on-top) is believed to be the most effective position for the sperms to flow into the cervix, there is no hard medical evidence to suggest that. It is alright to experience different positions as long as the semen remains in the vagina after ejaculation. The only sensible thing to do is for the woman to lie down on her back and elevate the legs for a while immediately after sex.

Tip 4 – the don’ts

Indeed this tip consists of several don’ts which are overlooked by some couples. They are:-

  • Woman should not be made to laugh immediately after ejaculation. Laughing involves the tensing of muscles which could force the semen out of the vagina, thus reducing the chances of conception

  • Don’t make sexual intercourse a stressful experience by putting unnecessary pressure on both partners. Try to keep it natural and romantic. It should not be likened to taking a GMAT or SAT!

  • Don’t drink before sex. Alcohol is proven to have adverse performance on man and woman.

Tip 5 – have every day or at least every other day

Wow! What we mean here is to have sex every day (if you are up it) or every other day, starting right after your period ends. It must be remembered that a sperm could survive in the woman for up to 5 or 6 days. So this method would give you a good shot to get pregnant. Some doctors say that having sex everyday would mean the sperms produced would not be sufficient to have successful fertilization. The other school of thought is having sex every other day would mean enough time for the sperm count to build up.

It is frustrating to fail each time when you try different methods. I would suggest you sit back and read through the above tips and try again. I am sure one day you would succeed.

St. Louis: The Pregnant Cat Health Care Plan

St. Louis,

Your cat is pregnant and you need to administer proper nutrition and fluids so that she can have a normal and easy labor. The pregnant cat health plan requires a birthing room. A cat usually picks a place away from people and other animals. This place is where the kittens are born and cleaned. A mother may move the kittens to a new area when they are about one to two weeks old. If you do not want this to happen, you may have to pick a place that confines her during labor and nursing.

Proper exercise is needed for the pregnant cat and monitoring of all activities with other pets must be done to prevent miscarriages. The first sign your cat is pregnant is about three weeks after conception, the nibbles appear pink and will be tender. Now is the time to feed a healthy diet that will nutritious the unborn kittens as they grow to term. If the mother cat is healthy, the kittens should be born healthy.

A pregnant cat health plan does not include rabies shots or distemper shots during pregnancy. This can harm the unborn kittens. The only things a vet will do are check for heartbeats and recommend the proper food and maybe some vitamins. A Blood test is done to check the mother’s health. By nine weeks, you need to monitor the mother closely as she will deliver anytime.

The pregnant cat will require some help from you, the owner, if complications happen during the birthing process. Try to read up on some simple birthing mishaps that might require your help and learn the proper way to do them in case the need arises. A veterinarian’s telephone number should be in place in case something serious happens either to the mother or to the kittens.

Once the mother delivers, she will clean her new kittens and start to nurse them. Keep her litter box clean and supply her with plenty of water and plenty of food during the next six weeks. Pregnant cat health does not require a lot of work as the mother usually does everything. You want to make sure the birthing area is cleaned up after the mother has done the necessary cleaning.

The pregnant cat health does not stop after birth; you must keep the mother in perfect health to care for her kittens. These means checking the nipples from time to time to see if they look healthy and have no problems or sores. The cat must be kept away from other male cats and left to nurture your kittens. Once the kittens start moving around, the mother will be busy trying to control them and eventually, she will get sick of them bothering her. She needs to wean the kittens by about five weeks. This is when you need to supply the kittens with kitten food. The mother will reach them to use the litter box, but in some cases, the mother does not and you will have to train them yourself.

St. Louis: The Three General Methods of Blood Collection

St. Louis,

Blood collection is a vital procedure in blood testing. Proper blood collection is required to ensure the reliability of results. The general methods for blood collection are (note that this is only a reference guide – you should only attempt this if you are a professional):

1. Venipuncture – It is the collection of blood from the veins through the use of a needle and a syringe. In this procedure, the most common site of venipuncture is the antecubital fossa where the cephalic, basilic and mid-cubital veins are found. This procedure is required when large amounts of blood is needed for testing like in glucose, cholesterol, uric acid, creatinine, alkaline phosphatase test, and many blood chemistry determinations.

Materials needed

Gauge 20-22 needle, syringe, tourniquet, wet and dry cotton, 70 % isopropyl alcohol, vacutainer tubes or test tubes.

Precautions:

1.1. Remove the tourniquet first before the needle. Patients who have blood dyscrasia may bleed to death.

1.2. Avoid prolonged application of the tourniquet because it will cause venous stasis which will adversely affect the results.

1.3. Do not jerk the needle out of the vein because this may injure the vein and will cause discomfort in the patient.

1.4. Do not puncture the vein through and through because this will cause hematoma which is a bluish discoloration of the skin.

1.5. Allow the patient to rest for at least 10 minutes to ensure that he does not feel faint or that bleeding has stopped.

1.6. Sterilize before puncturing to ensure that the procedure is aspetic.

2. Capillary puncture – also known as fingerstick or finger puncture, is used when smaller volumes of blood is needed, like when performing Complete Blood Counts (CBC), peripheral blood smears and malarial smears. This method is useful for pediatric, obese and elderly patients where veins are small and cannot be palpated. It may also make use of the earlobe and big toe as puncture sites.

Materials needed

Lancet, capillettes, wet and dry cotton, 70 % isopropyl alcohol

Precautions

2.1. Puncture only the specified area as it may traumatize unintended sites like the bones.

2.2. Discard the first drop as this is made up of tissue fluid.

2.3. Sterilize first before puncturing.

3. Arterial Puncture – is the collection of blood from the arteries. This is oxygenated blood, while venous blood is non-oxygenated blood. This is usually used in Blood Gas Analysis (BGA) where the pH of blood, bicarbonate (HCO3), carbonic acid (H2CO3) and total carbon dioxide (TCO2) are determined

Materials needed

Luer lock syringe, vacutainer tubes, wet and dry cottons, 70% isopropyl alcohol

Precautions

3.1. Press the site of puncture for more than 15-30 minutes because the pressure of blood in the arteries is stronger than that in the veins.

3.2. Sterilize properly before puncturing.

3.3. Observe anaerobic collection as most samples are for blood gas testing.

These are the most common methods of blood collection. Each is utilized according to the needs of the patient.

The Three General Methods of Blood Collection

St. Louis: Increase Your Chances of Conception

St. Louis,

Having a baby is a wonderful experience and one that will enrich your life in so many ways. If you are hoping to get pregnant but are not sure when you will be ovulating, you should educate yourself on how to recognize obvious signs of ovulation. Ovulation occurs when one of your eggs is released from your ovaries ovary and it occurs toward the end of your menstrual menstrual cycle, although the exact time varies from month to month as well as from woman to woman.

If you are alert you can notice some subtle signs which indicate that you are probably ovulating. There is often a noticeably opaque, slippery vaginal secretion evident just before this period which look quite similar to raw egg whites. At other times this discharge is cloudy and sticky or may simply disappear completely.

Another way to know if you are ovulating is to take your basal temperature with a digital thermometer. Simply take the temperature reading during the mornings before getting out of bed. Write down the readings and be aware of a pattern emerging. Your most fertile days are those two to three days just before your basal temperature rises. Some women are going through ovulation during those times they have menstrual mild cramps, so if you are cramping slightly, you may well be ready to conceive.

You can also purchase a special ovulation test kit at your local pharmacy. These kits use samples of your urine to look for surges in hormone production that occur just before ovulation which can greatly increase the odds of conception. It is also recommended that you have intercourse every day around the time that you believe you may be ovulating. Having intercourse at least once each day during the days prior to ovulating may help you conceive.

By following the advice above you should be able to know when you are best able to conceive which will surely increase your chances for becoming pregnant. Once the miracle occurs you will have a lot of planning to do and will no doubt receive a lot of baby advice from women friends and family members who already have had children. Enjoy this very special time in your life! Motherhood is truly a gift from above and an experience that will change your life for the better. Good luck and may motherhood be everything you have always hoped it would be!

St. Louis: Risks of Unprotected Sex for Teenagers

St. Louis,

Are you one of those unable to control your libido? Have you indulged in unprotected sex? Do you know about the risks of unprotected sex and uncontrolled sexual habits? Well, read on if you are interested in gaining a basic understanding of what these are all about.

Among the many people indulging in sex, it is the first-timers and teens that perhaps face the wrath of unprotected sex the maximum. In other words, they are not aware of the serious ill-effects that such an overconfidence, inexperience and careless attitude can leave behind.

Firstly, the effects of a surprise pregnancy can be disastrous on a young girl just in her teenage. It is not just the girl alone that suffers but her entire family also is driven to the edge of agony and frustration.

There are other serious implications at the psychological and socio-economic levels. Medically speaking, there are so many complications that the young girls attract a lot of criticism and social stigma. In most of the cases where young girls and women under 25 have pre-marital or unprotected sex, they face a lot of issues in their reproductive cycle, especially in the later stages of their life.

Often, teens fail to understand the risks associated with multiple partners as well as unprotected sex. This leads to their indulging in unhealthy sexual practices that do not stand them in good stead.

Even if they use a condom, they may not be serious about the regular and correct usage of a suitable condom. In the rush of their libido, they get horny and jump headlong into sex.

Owing to their natural instincts triggered by their age and peer influence, most of the times, teens are not able to decide what is right and what is not. Such a cat-on-the-wall attitude is very risky because they remain oblivious of the real-life perils hidden in lieu of even a single incidence of unprotected sex.

There are very high chances for them to contract a sexually transmitted infection that cannot only ruin their peace of mind but also render them sexually incompetent and incompatible in the long run.

Another factor associated with teen sex habits that result in unprotected sex is the “everyone does it, what’s wrong if I do it?” attitude. Such an overconfidence is unwarranted when we look at the long, bright future these young girls and boys have beckoning them to achieve great heights.

It is up to us, the elders and experienced, to educate our youth regarding the risks associated with unprotected sex and help them take a wise decision.

Risks of Unprotected Sex for Teenagers

St. Louis: Old Wives Tales About Your Pregnancy

St. Louis,

Pregnancy is a wonderful time for the whole family. The expectant mother, the doting father, the excited grandparents and friends all make the event a momentous one that you will remember forever. There are plenty of people who will give advice on the best way to stay healthy and glowing during your term and lots of the information will just be hearsay, urban myth or stories past down from generation to generation. These are known as old wives tales, told by the elders in the family and past down through the ages.

Perhaps there may have been some truth to this kind of folklore, but let’s examine a few and see if there are any that you have heard from your parents.

1. If you have heartburn during the pregnancy, your baby will be born with lots of hair.

Or it could be all those odd cravings you have been having. Pickled onions and gravel will give anyone heartburn.

2. If the fetal heart is beating fast, it will be a girl.

This is hard to test unless you have the equipment at home, but rest assured, as long a the heart is beating hard, all will be fine no matter what gender it is.

3. Hot water and towels are needed for the delivery of the baby.

This was just something said to fathers to keep them out of the way and busy whilst the women got on with the real work of having the baby.

4. If you hang a string by a thread and dangle it over the belly of the mother, if it swings in a circle, you are having a boy and a girl if it goes back and forwards.

This also depends on how drunk you are when holding the string. A very inconclusive way to determine gender!

5. The time of conception is thought to have been an important way to tell if you are having a boy or a girl.

There is a chinese fertility chart that bases this on the age of the mother and the date of conception and is said to be 90% accurate.

6. If you eat the end slices of a loaf of bread whilst pregnant, you will be having a boy.

Crusts! Ugh! You have to be really hungry or pregnant to eat them!

7. If you are craving cheese during the pregnancy, it is going to be a boy.

Your body is shouting out for more protein. Why this means it will be a boy is beyond me.

8. If you are carrying your “bump” high and round it will be a girl.

But if it is a football shaped bump, it might be the next sporting superstar.

9. Dry skin on your hands means it’s a boy.

This will be a prelude to having to wash all of their dirty clothes.

10. Eating spicy food brings on the delivery of the baby.

Curry? Salsa? Who wouldn’t want to escape that!
